Schola Cantorum
“We have received thy mercy, O God, in the midst of thy temple.” - Psalm 47
As the Church's renovations are substantially complete, the Schola is actively seeking to expand. No particular musical experience is required: All that is required is a desire to learn and participate.
Historically, the singers responsible for the chant form the schola cantorum, the “school of singers.” Men in particular fulfill this task, as they were called to Levitical service both in serving the altar and praying the liturgy through chant.
The Schola sings the church’s official prayer, mass, and divine office in traditional Gregorian chant. Members learn the Church’s ancient chants as well as gain confidence and proficiency in reading traditional Gregorian notation.
The time requirement for the Schola varies and depends on the breadth of involvement. Meeting times are as follow:
- Tuesdays at 6:00 p.m. for rehearsals;
- Sunday High Mass at 10:00 a.m.;
- Other days on which a High Mass may occur as on holy days, other first-class feasts, and the Triduum;
- Such masses generally take place at 6:00 p.m.;
- Sunday at 6:00 p.m. for Vespers; and
- Other times for wedding and funeral masses.
This group is open to men of the parish aged 16 and above interested in deepening their relationship with Christ through song.
